Sustainable Environmental Technologies & Technology Research Group

Sustainable Environmental Management and Technologies Research Group (SÜÇEYTAG)’s studies on environmental sciences and technologies, and has a history of nearly 40 years. Since the mid-1990s, in addition to areas of environmental science and technology, "Sustainable environmental management" studies were started by closely monitoring the trends in the world and SÜÇEYTAG was decided to be set up. The main reason for this trend is to contribute to the efforts of "sustainable development" defined as ‘the protection of the balance between the natural resources and ecosystems, which is the basis of the life of present and future generations’.

The studies in Sustainable Environmental Technologies aims to reduce environmental pollution by producing new and high performance technologies or developing existing technologies to reduce the costs of treatment. In addition, investigating the methods of recycling as to reduce waste and obtaining energy and other products from wastes are among the research topics of this group. Therefore, SÜÇEYTAG is conducting research activities not only on environmental sciences and environmental technologies but also on issues related with quality of life, economic prosperity, public health, industrial productivity, natural resource use, and so on.

The research activities in the field of "Sustainable Environmental Technologies" are as follows:

  • Investigation of clean energy retrieval from biomass in Turkey
  • Development of circulating fluidized bed combustion technology for the mixtures of biomass and coal in Turkey
  • Iron and steel industry waste assessment and technology development for regenerative adsorption of hydrogen sulfide
  • Recovery and reuse of water and sludge of the wastewater treatment plants for agricultural purposes
  • Production of renewable energy and industrial chemical products from organic wastes
  • Organic acid production from municipal and agro-industrial wastes
  • Removal and recovery of nitrogen and phosphorus from domestic and agro-industrial wastewaters by struvite precipitation
  • Waste recovery and recycling of sludge
  • Minimization of sewage sludge
  • Use of the natural zeolite clinoptilolite for heavy metal removal (Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd, Pb) as a polishing step in industrial wastewater treatment
